For seniors, staying active and enjoying life are keys to well-being and exploring your hometown can be a rewarding and delightful experience. The Birches on Maple allows for a rich senior living experience in one of the most friendly and active towns in the country: Carrollton, Georgia. Named a City of Excellence in Georgia, as well as One of the 50 Best Small Southern Towns by Peachtree Publishers, Carrollton has a population of just over 25,000. The city is home to Tanner Health System, the University of West Georgia, and Southwire — one of the leading manufacturers of wire and cable in the world. Carrollton is considered "the cultural, educational, health care and commercial center for the west Georgia region."

Activities for all ages

  • Carrollton Center for the Arts - the home for “high-quality arts programming for residents and visitors of Carrollton and the surrounding communities through education, cultural enrichment, and arts advocacy.” The 50,000-square-foot facility opened on August 27, 2002 and includes a 272-seat theatre, a 3,000-square-foot art gallery for exhibitions, a galleria for permanent art and rotating art exhibitions, and much more
  • Unique Local Events - Mayfest in the spring; the People’s Parade on July 4th; the Off the Square Arts and Crafts Show in the fall; and the Christmas Tree Parade in the winter are just a few of the exciting events hosted by the city
  • Carrollton Parks & Recreation Department - a large variety of classes and activities are offered through the city’s parks & recreation department. Some of those most appealing to seniors might be water aerobics, indoor exercise programs/classes, and a variety of activities offered at the city's senior center
  • County Parks & Recreation Locations - Carrollton is the county seat for Carroll County, which features 33,421 acres of state, public, and private recreational parks and facilities. Catch a game at one of the city’s rec facilities, swim off the sandy beach at John Tanner Park , and camp or ride horses at McIntosh Reserve Park or Little Tallapoosa Park
  • Hobbs Farm Park - play the state's best disc golf course, workout on a variety of outdoor exercise equipment, or simply sit and relax at Hobbs Farm Park, which is also a trailhead location for the Carrollton Greenbelt (see below)
  • Carrollton GreenBelt - Walk or bike on Georgia's longest closed loop bike trail, with more than 18 miles of concrete path. It is the largest green-space and green-way conservation project that the city has undertaken. According to the city’s website, the trail connects several active and passive recreational areas that include ball fields, gyms, a pool, and new mountain bike trails.
  • The AMP - this beautiful amphitheater seats 750 - 1,000 guests and hosts countless free events, movies, and concerts throughout the year. The Amp’s Summer Concert Series is a favorite among locals
  • Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum - along the West Georgia Textile Heritage Trail , this unique museum connects people with the art and history of textiles in West Georgia
  • Historic Banning Mills - camp, swim, eat, hike, and fly high on the "Screaming Eagle" zip line, Guinness-certified as longest in the world
  • University of West Georgia - explore the gorgeous 645-acre campus; hold meetings, weddings, or family reunions in one of the university’s unique gathering spaces; sign up for classes; or purchase a day pass to the Campus Center gym, a premier exercise facility
  • The Townsend Center for the Performing Arts - located on the University of West Georgia campus, the Townsend Center boasts two performance venues, a 459-seat theatre with a proscenium stage and orchestra pit and the “black box” Richard L. Dangle Theatre, which can be staged and set up in a variety of ways, seating up to 170 for experimental theatre, chamber music, receptions, and other small-scale events
  • Neva Lomason Library - built in 1967, this 28,000-square-foot historic library has been recently refurbished and renovated, and is now an up-to-date hub for learning, gathering, and exploring
  • Blue Door Gallery Co-op of Carrollton - an art space operated by a group of local fine artists, Blue Door Gallery is the place to find fresh new works of art in painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramic art, and unique gift items
  • Fur Babies Cat Cafe - a foster home for cats brought into the Carroll County Animal Shelter, the feline residents live in this full-time home until they are adopted to their forever homes. Stop by and enjoy some time with the kitties. Who knows, you might end up taking home a new best friend!
  • Horton's Books & Gifts - recognized as Georgia's Oldest Bookstore, Horton's has been in business since 1891 and features new books and gift items
